In Europe, more than 2 million people live with an amputation and the vast majority of them suffer from phantom pain: an ache that is caused by the missing limb.
Although the causes of phantom pain are not very clear for health professionals, the most accredited explanation is that the brain thinks that the missing part of the body is still present: the memory of pain is returned and the signal is transformed into pain by the brain.
Such phantom pain can be very severe and affect hugely the everyday life of amputees, who often rely on strong painkillers to cope with the suffering, with collateral effects of the drugs, which often incapacitate them as much as the phantom pain itself.
